[ Dogs ] Open Question : Somebody PLEASE help me with my Miniature Dachshund!?
I have a 2 1/2 yr old Miniature Dachshund who is as smart an animal as I have ever seen. He knows 26 “command” tricks, 13 of which he learned when he was only about 6 months old all in the course of ONE day. He also understands EXACTLY what you are saying to him (eg. “Go get me your red sneaker”……he has a GAZILLION toys and if you tell him which toy you want him to bring you he will bring you the right toy every time) When we get ready to leave and he knows he can’t go with us all you have to do is say “Not this time” and he goes and gets in his kennel. But if you tell him he can go, he runs over and stands by where his leash is hanging and waits for you to hook him up…things like this. The problem is this……he is the BARKIEST dog I have ever owned and I cannot for the life of me get him to stop with any sort of command. Now the stupid thing is, he barks at the doorbell, the telephone, the vacuum cleaner, other dogs ten times his size like Dobermans and Rottweilers (he weighs a whopping 8 pounds) BUT we can walk right though an entire flock of geese or ducks in the park and he acts like he doesn’t even see them ….WHAT is that about? How can I get him to obey me and stop barking on command? I have tried everything from voice commands to squirting him with water to using one of those things that makes a high pitched noise that only animals can hear….NOTHING works….I WILL NOT HIT HIM…I REFUSE TO HIT an animal so please don’t suggest that.
